When refugee families arrive in Utah, they come seeking what so many of us hope for: safety, stability, and the opportunity to build a brighter future for their children. For one recently arrived family of four, a donated vehicle is helping make that future possible.

After leaving their home country of Malaysia, the family arrived in Utah ready to start over. The father brought with him more than 20 years of experience in driving and construction, while the mother previously worked as a hospital cleaner. Like many newly arrived refugee families, they were eager to work hard and become self-sufficient as quickly as possible.

Through the support of CCS’ Refugee Resettlement Job Development team, one parent secured employment at Walmart as a store associate, while the other began receiving specialized support through our Preferred Communities Program. Despite the many challenges that come with starting over in a new country, the family remained determined to create a stable life for their children. One of their greatest obstacles, however, was transportation.

Without access to a vehicle, the family depended entirely on public transportation while juggling changing work schedules, medical appointments, and their children’s school needs. Even simple daily responsibilities became overwhelming. Early school pickups, long commutes, and limited transit options created stress and made it difficult to maintain stability on a single income.

Recognizing both the family’s need and their incredible determination, CCS selected them to receive a vehicle provided to the agency by a generous donor.

For this family, the car represents far more than transportation. It represents freedom, opportunity, and hope. Reliable transportation will allow them to more easily get to work, attend medical appointments, support their children’s education, and continue building a strong foundation in their new community. Their resilience and commitment to self-sufficiency are inspiring reminders of the strength refugee families bring with them as they rebuild their lives.

We are deeply grateful to the generous donor whose compassion continues to make a lasting impact for this family.

There are many families facing similar transportation challenges, and future vehicle donations can help provide the same sense of stability and opportunity to others beginning again.
