We are honored to share the story of the Al-Hassan family, whose perseverance and dedication highlight the critical impact of advocacy and support for families navigating complex challenges.

The family, Syrian refugees, arrived in the United States facing countless obstacles—learning a new language, navigating unfamiliar systems, and working to rebuild their lives while caring for their adult son, who lives with severe physical disabilities and depends entirely on them for daily needs. For many refugee families, accessing healthcare, education, and government benefits can feel like navigating an overwhelming maze, and the Al-Hassans were no exception.

Without legal guardianship, they faced barriers to securing essential medical care and government support for their son. With guidance from CCS’ Refugee Resettlement team, the family filed for guardianship through the court. Through compassionate advocacy and careful navigation of the process, they were able to successfully waive the $395 court filing fee, removing a significant financial barrier.

Following the hearing, the judge granted the parents full legal guardianship of their son. This legal recognition unlocked access to crucial benefits, including Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and gave them the authority to manage both his medical and financial needs. Beyond these practical benefits, obtaining guardianship brought a renewed sense of stability, dignity, and peace of mind for the family.

The Al-Hassans’ story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of refugee families, who overcome extraordinary barriers while caring for loved ones and building new lives in a new country. With persistence, courage, and support from their community, they now have the legal foundation to care for their son with confidence.
