President Biden Revises Annual Refugee Admissions Cap

President Biden has revised the refugee admissions cap for the 2021 fiscal year.

The cap was raised from the historically low 15,000 refugees determined by President Trump before leaving office, to 62,500.

There has also been an adjustment to regional allocations for this fiscal year. The allocations are as follows:

Africa: 22,000
East Asia: 6,000
Europe and Central Asia: 4,000
Latin America and the Caribbean: 5,000
Near East and South Asia: 13,000
Unallocated Reserve: 12,500

In a statement released by the White House, President Biden noted, “The United States Refugee Admissions Program embodies America’s commitment to protect the most vulnerable, and to stand as a beacon of liberty and refuge to the world. It’s a statement about who we are, and who we want to be.”

Alongside this fiscal year’s revision, President Biden announced his intention to raise the refugee admissions cap for the upcoming fiscal year to 125,000.
