One morning, Stacey and her oldest son were in the car cracking jokes and lip-syncing to songs on the radio. After a good laugh, Stacey's son leaned over and said, "I like this a lot better, mom."
At that moment, Stacey knew it was time for a change. Her son was comparing his mom in the morning to his mom in the evening. Stacey had been high the previous evening, and for many of the last several years as well. By this point, she was at the end of her rope and had resigned herself to her lot in life. However, her son's comment changed everything. "After that morning, I decided it was time to get a job and quit drugs," Stacey said. Stacey knew it would be a long road learning to live without drugs and getting back on her feet. One of the biggest struggles was deciding which bills could be paid on her small income for a family of four. A next door neighbor told Stacey about the CCS food bank in Ogden. With help, Stacey was able to apply for food and made her first visit to the Hall Food Bank. "It (going to the food bank) was awkward at first," Stacey said. "I felt embarrassed and thought, this is only for poor people." As a single mother of three children, Stacey says it is always a daily struggle to get by and meet all of her childrens' needs. However, between working two jobs and finding resources like the food bank, everything is falling into place. "It's hard out there, if it weren't for resources like the food bank, it would be harder." Stacey said. Stacey isn't content to just accept help from the food bank, she loves to give back. She brings other families in need of help to the food bank for the first time, and makes sure they feel comfortable. She is also using the food bank as a way to teach her children about helping others. "I got the 'want to' to help others from CCS," Stacey said. "And my kids love helping too. They sit down and make hygiene kits and help in the food bank." The Hall Food Bank has given Stacey and her family more than just food; it has given them a chance at a better life. |
