Client Spotlight: Getting Her Life Back PDF Print E-mail

For 21 years, Catholic Community Services' Women's Treatment client, Seleena, just didn't care. Her daughter spent her entire childhood around drugs, never knowing a drug-free mother. Seleena's younger son almost suffered the same fate, until the unthinkable happened

One evening while visiting a friend's home, Seleena discovered a large stash of meth and thought to herself, "No one is around, what could it hurt?" So she picked up the bag, and began using the drug.

Minutes later, police raided the home while following a tip that it may contain a methamphetamine lab. The police caught Seleena red-handed.

"My son was taken away by DCFS (Division of Child and Family Services), and it just killed me," Seleena said.

At that moment, Seleena started to care.

"I knew what I had to do," Seleena said. "I fought every battle and jumped through every hoop I had to to get better and get my son back."

Seleena signed up for parenting classes, and started rehabilitation at CCS' Women's Treatment Program.

"At first I was scared, but they (CCS staff) pushed me to get through this, and I successfully graduated the program," Seleena said. "Treatment was the best terrible time I have ever had, but in the end I got my life and my son back."

Clean for two years, Seleena now works a successful job, and still attends after-care classes at CCS' Women's Treatment Program once a week. Seleena lives with her son, who is in the fifth grade. Her adult daughter is drug free as well, and lives with her own family in Alaska. Seleena's final goal is to go back to school and become a counselor, helping other people start to care and get their lives back.
